How to Massage Scalp to Promote Hair Growth

Picture

Performing a hair care regimen that keeps hair clean, conditioned and moisturized helps to ensure that hair grows out strong and healthy. Adding a scalp massage to a hair care regimen stimulates the scalp, improves circulation and reduces stress. Those looking to promote hair growth should consider performing scalp massages regularly.

Step 1

Perform a scalp massage with wet or dry hair, based on personal preference, as long as hair is clean and free from hair products. Wash hair with shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Some people prefer doing a massage with conditioner in the hair; others prefer to wash, condition and rinse hair before beginning the massage. If working with wet hair, comb through gently to remove any tangles.

Step 2

Massage your scalp using the "checkmark" method. Spread your fingers, and then place your fingertips on the scalp. Avoid using fingernails to prevent breaking hair strands or damaging the scalp. Keeping finger tips on the scalp at all times, extend and contract the fingers two to three times; similar to the shape of a checkmark. Move fingers around the scalp, covering all areas. Do a standard massage method by spreading the fingers, and then placing the fingertips on the scalp. Use slow, gentle movements to move fingertips in a circular motion, alternating fingertips around different areas of the scalp.

Step 3

Add two to three drops of an essential oil such as rosemary, lavender, thyme or cedarwood to the finger tips before massaging the scalp. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, essential oils increase circulation and are commonly used to treat the scalps of alopecia patients. Essential oils also help in providing moisture to a dry scalp. Those with oily skin or oily scalps should check with their hairstylist about other products to use instead of essential oils. Some conditioners have mint or similar elements in them to provide a more relaxing or stimulating experience.

Step 4

Massage the scalp for at least three minutes or longer if preferred. Repeat as often as necessary. Do scalp massages anytime with the understanding that primary benefits of scalp massages occur when massages are performed once or twice daily.
